14 team SPL

14 TEAM SPL

Is it time for a change to a 14 team league?

This is being driven by the non-OF clubs although one proposal which seems to have support has come from Campbell Ogylvie at Rangers.
One bone of contention at the moment is that after the split at 33 matches there is little opportunity for the bottom club to avoid relegation in their five remaining matches. The other matches are virtually meaningless.

With a 14 team set-up, the split would take place after 26 matches when every club has played each other home and away. The top six would then play each other home and away for the SPL championship over 36 matches. Meanwhile the bottom eight would play each other home and away to decide relegation over 40 matches.

So there is still hope for the clubs at the bottom after the split as they have enough matches left to avoid relegation and make each game meaningful. Although they would play 4 extra matches compared to the top six, many of them may be out of the Scottish Cup in the later stages of the season and this would also avoid having blank Saturdays.

What do you think?
