Away games in Europe aren’t always Great!
Thursday 20th September 1984. Paris, France.
Just after a 4-0 hammering from French team Paris St Germain the bus was trundling up the motorway towards the Port of Calais.
Not long into the trip, nature called, and the bus full of Hearts fans piled off the single decker to water the wall. All Hearts fans, except one. Paul Cameron took a good few meters further down the dry stane-dyke, as number two was calling (lol), armed with nothing but a copy of the previous day's Sun, nature took its course. Unfortunately Paul didn’t tell anyone of his need, so the bus resumed its way back along the motorway! No money, no food, mobiles weren’t invented yet, 300 miles from Calais, Paul thought to himself "it’s obviously a wind up, they'll be back the now". But the lager swilling card playing inhabitants of the bus were oblivious to the fact that Paul wasn’t onboard. It wasn’t until on the ferry approaching port in Dover that someone noticed!! Ronnie MacDonald was the one who noticed (a work colleague of Paul). He had obviously had one or two too many, as he started running about shouting "man overboard! Man overboard!"
What happened in between the time where Paul stopped off in France and the time he managed to get home (which was 5 days later!) with his blood-red soles, is a wee bit unclear, but this was Paul’s first and last UEFA cup away match!
