Dunfermline lifted themselves off the bottom of the SPL table and record their first win under the leadership of Davie Hay with a 1-0 victory over Hearts.
Hearts manager Craig Levein made six changes from the side which won their UEFA Cup tie against Braga on Thursday night, with influential defender Steven Pressley injured and experienced players such as Alan Maybury starting from the bench.
An impressive second-half performance from Dunfermline showed up the weaknesses in a tired Hearts side and in the end Barry Nicholson's 65th minute goal was enough to give the Pars the three points.
There was a promising start to the first half with both sides creating early chances. Dunfermline's Craig Brewster saw his shot easily gathered by Craig Gordon, while Hearts defender Craig Sives stabbed the ball wide of goal.
But the game quickly stagnated and it wasn't until the 43rd minute that either side looked like scoring.
The best chance of the first period fell to Michael Stewart who should have given the visitors the lead when his left-footed shot from 18 yards out went narrowly over the bar.
Dunfermline took control of the second half and less than a minute after the restart should have taken the lead when Brewster was pulled down in the box by Sives and the referee awarded a penalty.
Gary Dempsey stepped up to take the spot-kick, but was denied by an excellent diving save from Gordon.
It was the start of a frustrating second half for Dempsey who saw Gordon save numerous shots.
It was Nicholson who broke the deadlock on 65 minutes after steeling possession in the midfield before chipping the ball over Gordon high into the right-hand corner of the net.
Less than ten minutes later Billy Mehmet had a chance to double the lead but Robbie Nielson bailed out Hearts, clearing Mehmet's header off the line while Gordon was rooted to the spot.
Seconds later Dempsey struck again, but this time his shot went narrowly wide. Then on 76 minutes he picked up a reverse ball from Brewster only to see his powerful shot from six yards out deflected behind by the diving keeper.
In the closing minutes Hearts manager Levein sent Paul Hartley, Jamie McAllister and Dennis Wyness up front in search of an equaliser, but none of them could break through the Dunfermline defence.
It was a nervous last period for Dunfermline who should have been more than one goal ahead, but despite Hartley's late break they held on for the win.
