George Burley made capital gains in his first Edinburgh derby as Hearts moved joint top of the SPL.
The Hearts manager saw Rudi Skacel, Paul Hartley with a penalty, substitute Stephen Simmons and Saulius Mikolunias give his side a convincing victory at Tynecastle.
Hibs manager Tony Mowbray was sent to the stands in the last minute of the first half after remarks made to referee Stuart Dougal.
Hearts took the lead after 13 minutes with an untidy goal. Andy Webster released Hartley and he set up Skacel who bundled the ball past Zibi Malkowski with the aid of a deflection off Gary Smith.
Hibs responded immediately and it took an excellent save from Craig Gordon to keep out a Gary Caldwell header from Kevin Thomson's corner.
Hibs lost skipper Caldwell after 26 minutes after he collided with his own goalkeeper and suffered a rib injury which required hospital treatment and he was replaced by Chris Hogg.
Amadou Konte came within inches of an equaliser four minutes into the second half but dragged his shot wide after Thomson had carved out the chance.
Guillaume Beuzelin should have scored moments later when he had a free header from only six yards out but steered his effort wide.
But Hibs' revival was brought to an abrupt end when Stephen Glass handled in the penalty area in the 58th minute and Hartley drove home the penalty.
A dreadful mistake by Beuzelin gave Hearts their third with substitute Simmons providing an accomplished finish.
With seven minutes left, Mikoliunas capped the win with a terrific 20-yard strike which flew past Malkowski.
